Soil under broadleaf forests stores more carbon, impacting global climate change.
Soil in different types of forests stores varying amounts of carbon, with broadleaf forests having the highest levels. Labile carbon fractions in the soil, which are easily decomposed, also differ between forest types. Warmer temperatures and the type of litter that falls on the soil affect how these labile carbon fractions change over time. Broadleaf forests have more total carbon but a lower percentage of labile carbon compared to other forests.
