Irrigation and soil amendments boost rice yield by 49% in Ghana
The study looked at how adding nutrients to the soil and controlling weeds can help rice plants grow better and produce more grain. They tested different types of fertilizers and weeding methods in a field in Ghana with both irrigation and rainwater. Results showed that using irrigation increased rice yield by 49%, while adding cow dung, mineral fertilizer, or poultry fertilizer increased yield by 5.4%, 28%, and 8% respectively. Keeping the field weed-free also led to higher yields. Overall, using irrigation increased production costs but also increased profits compared to rainwater.
