Domestic and global agricultural efficiency boost lifts South African welfare
In the study, researchers examined how improvements in farming efficiency affect people in South Africa. They used a detailed model to look at the impacts of both local and global changes in agriculture. The results showed that when farms operate more efficiently, it benefits the country as a whole. Local efficiency gains brought slightly more benefits, especially helping South African farmers by improving their access to global markets. This helped offset any negative effects from lower prices for farmers. The study found that while poorer households benefit more as consumers, wealthier farming regions gain more as producers. By understanding these effects, policymakers can make decisions to support different groups in the country.
