New Possessive Construction Unveiled: Stronger Close Possession Between Animate Entities Identified
The article introduces a new type of possessive construction called the one’s own construction. It explores how this construction alternates between using 's-genitive own and of-genitive own forms. The study found that more animate things are likely to use of-genitive own, while abstract things tend to use s-genitive own. Inalienable relationships are more likely to be of-genitive own, and s-genitive own often indicates a strong part-whole relationship. These differences are statistically significant, showing that the choice between the two forms is influenced by the specific characteristics of the possessum.
