Toxic Rice Farming Pollutes Waterways, Threatens Ecosystem Collapse in China
Rice farming in Changzhou City and Yixing City, China, is causing pollution in the rivers due to excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers. The study calculated the amount of pollutants entering the rivers from rice agriculture, finding that COD and TN were the main contributors. The pollution footprint of TN was the largest, followed by TP and COD. The pollution pressure index indicated that the rivers are under moderate pollution stress. Overall, the rivers are unable to handle the amount of pollutants being discharged from rice agriculture in the area.
