A new diversity index called the scaling diversity index can measure both the variety and balance of species in an ecosystem, unlike traditional indices. It has been successfully used to study ecological diversity in different areas, like Fukang in China. The scaling diversity index is sensitive to the level of detail used and is easy to understand. It is a cost-effective and scientifically valid tool for studying biodiversity.
