Technological progress drives African agriculture growth, but efficiency decline hampers productivity.
African agriculture productivity was studied from 1980 to 2007. The main focus was on measuring total factor productivity (TFP) using data from the Food and Agriculture Organization. The researchers found that technological progress was the main driver of TFP growth, with technical change increasing by 1%. However, there were declines in efficiency levels, such as technical productivity, mix efficiency, and scale efficiency. To improve productivity growth, measures like promoting irrigation, improving governance, mechanization, and reducing land fragmentation are recommended.
