Data from three gauge stations show that Yichang has the most sediment, Hankou the least, and Datong the second most. During floods, sediment levels are highest. Some sediment gets trapped in the middle river, while the rest flows to the river mouth. Understanding this flow is important for studying the river's shape and landscape.
