Optimizing nitrogen levels boosts maize yield without harming the environment
Improving how efficiently plants use nitrogen is important for growing maize. Two types of maize were studied to see how different levels of nitrogen affected their roots and growth. The roots of one type of maize were longer and had more surface area than the other type when there was low nitrogen. As more nitrogen was added, the root differences between the two types decreased. The roots grew the most during the silking stage. The maize with more nitrogen had higher dry matter accumulation and better transport to the grain. Medium and high nitrogen levels helped maize produce more, but too much nitrogen actually decreased the yield. This study gives guidance on how to grow maize better.
