Rainfall variability threatens rice production in Nigeria, sparking urgent need for change
Rainfall variability affects rice production in Nigeria. The study looked at the relationship between rainfall and rice yield from 1980 to 2012. They found that rainfall has a significant impact on rice production, with a long-term multiplier effect of 3.151. Short-term rainfall also positively affects rice yield. However, relying solely on rainfall for rice production is not enough to meet Nigeria's rice demand. The government should invest in irrigation to ensure year-round rice production, increase farmers' income, reduce rice imports, alleviate poverty, and ensure food security.
