Gentrification in Nanjing reshapes social structure and privatizes public spaces.
The article discusses how gentrification is happening in Nanjing, China due to urban renewal and changes in land and property policies. The researchers studied 1,075 residential communities in Nanjing to understand the process, characteristics, and evolution of gentrification. They found that gentrification in Nanjing is different from Western countries in terms of spatial patterns, dominant forces, and pathways. Gentrification in Nanjing is leading to the emergence of new social structures, fragmentation of social spaces, and privatization of public spaces. Changes in community management and lifestyles are also affecting neighbor relationships in gentrified areas. The study shows that gentrification dynamics in China are unique and evolving differently compared to Western countries.
