Residents in Beijing willing to pay for cleaner air, survey finds.
The study looked at how much people in Beijing are willing to pay to improve air quality using a method called contingent valuation. They found that residents are willing to pay 143 Yuan per household per year for a 50% reduction in pollution, totaling 336 million Yuan annually. This is about 0.7% to 0.8% of their yearly income. Most people understood the survey well, showing that the method worked. The researchers believe that this method can be used in China to estimate the value of better environmental quality in cities. They also suggest that as people earn more and care more about the environment, they are more willing to pay for cleaner air.
