Vegetation Removal and Tillage Increase Runoff and Soil Erosion on Steep Lands
Land use changes can impact runoff and soil erosion on steep lands. A study in China found that removing vegetation and tilling the soil increased runoff and soil erosion. Subsurface runoff decreased significantly after vegetation removal, and soil erosion rates were much higher in plots without vegetation cover. To reduce runoff and erosion on steep lands, it is important to maintain maximum vegetation cover and minimize tillage practices.
