New Grapevine Root System Discovery Could Revolutionize Vineyard Cultivation
Researchers studied different grapevine scion/rootstock combinations to compare their root system architectures. They found that 1103P root system goes deep while SO4 root system stays shallow. The roots of 1103P spread vertically between 0-80 cm, with most roots at 20-40 cm depth, while SO4 roots mainly stay in the top 20 cm. Different scions affected root distribution and number, but not branching angle. Overall, the choice of rootstock is crucial based on environmental conditions.
