Discovery of Floral Organogenesis Pattern Could Revolutionize Plant Classification
The researchers studied how the flowers of Reineckia carnea develop. They found that the petals and stamens grow in a unique way, forming a short tube at the end. The female part of the flower, called the carpel, also grows in a specific pattern and eventually joins with the petals and stamens. Flowers at the top of the plant may have different numbers of petals and stamens. By comparing these findings with other related plants, they discovered that Convallaria is more advanced, while Speirantha is more primitive than Reineckia.
