High density dwarf apple orchards in China boost fruit yield.
The study looked at how well two types of dwarf apple trees in China produce fruit and how much light they get. One type had 54,000 shoots per area and produced 3,263 kg of fruit, while the other had 93,000 shoots and produced 3,931 kg. The first type had better light coverage in the canopy, but the second type had more shoots and higher fruit yield. Both types produced mostly high-quality fruit. The study suggests that using these types of dwarf apple trees in medium planting density could be good for apple orchards in Central China.
