Bulgarian National Bank: From Evolution to Independence in 130 Years.
The Bulgarian National Bank started as a regular bank in 1879 and later became the central bank of Bulgaria in 1928. During the socialist period, it became the only bank in the country from 1971 to 1982. After transitioning to a market economy in 1991, the bank regained its independence. Following a banking crisis in 1996-1997, the National Bank began operating under a currency board arrangement.
