Water presence boosts coalbed methane extraction rates by up to 32 times!
The researchers studied how water affects the ability of coal to store methane gas. They used coal samples with different moisture levels and a special system to measure gas adsorption. They found that dry coal samples adsorb gas much faster and in larger amounts compared to wet coal samples. The amount of gas stored in the coal decreases as the moisture content increases. This decrease is more gradual in one type of coal compared to another.
