European countries and cities are focusing on sustainability, with the EU using strategies like cohesion policy to improve competitiveness and innovation. A study created a sustainability index for 27 EU countries and 69 major cities, looking at social inclusion, economic status, and environmental innovation. Results show that older EU countries are more advanced in sustainability, with some Eastern European countries catching up. Barcelona stands out as a sustainable city, even though Spain lags behind in sustainable development.
