Rare Fossil Discovery in China Expands Geographic Range of Ancient Creature
Dinomischus is a rare solitary creature that feeds while suspended above the seafloor. It has a cone-shaped body with elongated bracts and a stem, with visible internal organs and a stomach pouch. Dinomischus is believed to be a primitive ancestor of entoprocts based on its morphology and lifestyle. Previously known only from the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang biotas, a single specimen of Dinomischus was found in the Kaili biota in Guizhou, China, expanding its known geographic range. This discovery suggests that rare Dinomischus could tolerate deeper waters during the Middle Cambrian period than previously thought.
