Spray pollination revolutionizes Japanese pear cultivation for higher yields and quality.
The researchers studied using spray pollination to pollinate two Japanese pear cultivars, 'Akizuki' and 'Shuurei'. They found that spray pollination with a mixture of pollen, agar, and sucrose resulted in similar fruit set levels as hand pollination. Both cultivars showed weak self-incompatibility, with some fruits setting even without pollination. 'Akizuki' also displayed parthenocarpic characteristics. Fruit quality parameters were comparable between spray and hand pollination methods. Overall, spray pollination is a convenient and effective way to grow 'Akizuki' and 'Shuurei' Japanese pears.
