Waste amendments boost soil carbon levels and accelerate decomposition rates
The study looked at how adding food and garden waste to soil affects carbon levels and decomposition. They tested different mixtures of waste in a lab experiment for 60 days. Results showed that adding waste increased carbon decomposition and sped up the process. There were two stages of decomposition, with a change happening around 10 days. Adding more waste increased soil carbon levels. Food and garden waste had similar effects on soil carbon, but the amount of waste added made a difference. The more waste added, the more carbon was stored in the soil.
