Local winds in Yunnan Province shift dramatically, impacting daily weather patterns.
Researchers studied the wind patterns in Dali, Yunnan Province, using radar observations. They found that the local terrain strongly influenced the wind direction and speed. Below 600 meters, the wind was southwest in the afternoon and night, with strong downdrafts. Above 600 meters, the wind was southwest and northwest with high speeds. The area experienced mountain-valley breezes, lake-land breezes, and ravine winds. Wind speed increased with height, with faster speeds at night below Diancang mountain. At different heights, the prevailing wind direction changed from southeast during the day to southwest at night.
