Eutrophic lake restoration: introducing K-selected plants for stable aquatic vegetation.
The study looked at how aquatic plants in a shallow lake were affected by pollution. They found that a specific plant, Potamogeton maackianus, disappeared from the lake, and other plants sensitive to pollution also declined. Some areas of the lake shifted from plant dominance to algae dominance. Restoring the plants in less polluted areas was successful when herbivorous fish were removed. To restore severely polluted areas, reducing nutrient pollution is crucial. Introducing specific types of plants can help with the recovery of aquatic vegetation. An introduced plant, Elodea canadensis, survived in some areas but not in highly polluted ones.
