Cropland expansion threatens Brazil's Cerrado-Caatinga ecosystems, protected areas offer hope.
Scientists looked at changes in land use in a region between two different types of landscapes in Brazil, called Cerrado and Caatinga. They wanted to understand what factors influenced these changes. By studying the area in Piauí, they discovered that the natural vegetation covered a large part in 2016. Surprisingly, the distance to roads didn't have a big impact on deforestation. However, factors like proximity to ports, large property sizes, and land prices influenced how the land was used. Additionally, having protected areas in the region helped reduce deforestation. Overall, these findings show how different things can affect how land is used in this part of Brazil.
