Fossil power plants' efficiency boost fails to curb surging CO2 emissions, renewable energy crucial for climate goals.
This article examines how fossil fuel power plants impact greenhouse gas emissions. It shows that energy efficiency improvements can cut emissions by 29%, but due to increasing power generation, emissions still rise. New power plants being built may not be able to capture CO2 effectively. Even though efficiency has improved, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to increase by 10% by 2020. Only a fraction of power plants can successfully use CO2 capture technology, making it hard to meet emission goals. To address this, the research suggests focusing on renewable energy and energy conservation to reduce emissions from power generation.
