Straw mulching boosts soil carbon, plastic film mulching hinders - study
The study looked at how soil carbon and nitrogen levels change in fields growing corn and wheat with straw or plastic mulch. Straw mulch increased soil carbon, while plastic mulch decreased it. Irrigation helped maintain soil carbon levels under plastic mulch for wheat. Total nitrogen and nitrate levels in the soil varied during the growth of corn and wheat, with smaller changes in nitrogen compared to nitrate. Irrigation did not affect nitrogen levels but limited nitrate increase in wheat.
