Social Media Attention Reflects Traditional Journal Impact, Favoring Established Scholars
Changes in how scientists share their work online are being studied. A new metric called Journal Social Impact (JSI) was created using data from various sources like social media and news sites. JSI was compared to traditional citation-based metrics and was found to be related to them. Journals with a long history of impact tend to get more online attention. Mendeley and Twitter are popular platforms for sharing scholarly articles. Social network readership has the strongest connection to traditional metrics. Overall, this research helps us understand how online attention relates to the impact of scientific articles and journals.
