Biochar Boosts Soil Fertility, Transforming Degraded Farmlands into Thriving Ecosystems
The researchers examined how adding biochar to different agricultural soils can improve soil health and nutrient retention. They used scanning electron microscopy to study the interaction between wood-based biochar and four diverse soils over four weeks. Results showed that biochar altered soil particle attachments and increased microbial activity and soil respiration. All three types of biochar tested had the potential to enhance soil health by promoting microbial activity. In clay-like soils, the biochars led to higher microbial activity after 28 days of application. These findings suggest that biochar could be a beneficial soil amendment for improving soil conditions in agriculture.
