Runoff pollution threatens freshwater ecosystems worldwide, new study warns.
In this study, scientists investigated how phosphorus (P) is carried away by water during rainfall. They used controlled rainfall on different slopes to see how much P ended up in the runoff and sediment. Results showed that more P was in the runoff at first, then it stabilized. More runoff and sediment were seen on steeper slopes and with heavier rain. The runoff had higher P levels right after starting, which then stabilized. Most of the P traveled through the sediment that was lost.
