The researchers studied vegetation and pollen at different altitudes on the north slope of the Middle Tianshan Mountains in China. They found six main zones of vegetation, from alpine cushion plants to desert plants. Some pollen was found at unexpected altitudes, suggesting it was carried by winds. Strong northwest winds play a big role in moving pollen around the area.
