Booming cities risk losing economic edge as agglomeration fades, linkages matter more
The study examines how businesses benefit from being close to each other in cities, known as agglomeration economies, and how industries that work together benefit, called linkage effects. It focuses on Japanese cities and uses a model to estimate these effects on manufacturing industries. The researchers found that different industries see varying benefits from being near one another. They also discovered that over time, the advantages of clustering firms together are decreasing, but the benefits from industries working together are still significant. This suggests that even as cities evolve, the connections between industries remain valuable for businesses.
