Biofuels Threaten Food Security, Fail to Curb Emissions
This presentation explores how biofuels affect greenhouse gas emissions with a focus on land use changes (LUC) for bioenergy crops. By considering the carbon impact of LUC, researchers analyzed different biofuels using IPCC Guidelines. They found that using natural land for biofuel production could clash with emission reduction goals. Current practices tend to promote biofuels on former cropland, increasing competition for food production. The study questions if using degraded land for bioenergy is cost-effective, stating that current rules do not push for this option. Prioritizing LUC for bioenergy can minimize direct LUC but might drive indirect LUC.
