Chongqing's forests generate over $100 billion in ecosystem services, boosting tourism and climate regulation.
The researchers evaluated the economic value of forest ecosystem services in Chongqing by assessing different functions like providing products and regulating the environment. They found that from 2006 to 2011, the value of forest products increased by 45.82%. The forest also stored nearly 1 million tons more carbon by 2011. Water conservation value increased by 59.21 billion yuan, erosion control improved, and the climate regulation value increased by 4.586 billion yuan. Forest-based tourism income rose by 68.34 billion yuan. Overall, these results show that the services provided by Chongqing's forest ecosystem have great economic value, particularly in water conservation, climate regulation, and tourism.
