Global trade patterns shift, leaving Least-Developed Countries vulnerable to shocks.
LDCs' trade patterns changed in the past decade due to shifts in global demand towards emerging countries and high commodity prices. This led to more diverse exports but also increased reliance on expensive commodities. LDCs face vulnerability to external shocks and have mostly had trade deficits. Efforts towards product diversification are needed, with support from preferential market access and participation in global value chains. Joining these chains requires a conducive trade environment and active trade facilitation programs. Upgrading to higher value-added activities requires comprehensive policies.
