China's Surging Agrifood Imports Driven by Income Growth, Not Trade Policies.
The study looked at how changes in China's economy and trade policies affect its imports of agricultural products from the EU. They analyzed trade data from 1986 to 2005 to see how prices and trade policies influence China's imports. The results showed that while Chinese agricultural imports are not very sensitive to price changes, changes in relative prices do affect the market share of EU exports. Tariff reductions didn't have a big impact on the quantity of agricultural imports from the EU. China's increasing imports of agrifood are mainly driven by the country's growing population and income.
