New herbicide strategy boosts rice yield by 4.3% in weed-infested fields.
Weeds are a big problem in dry-seeded rice fields because they grow at the same time as the rice and there's no water to drown them out. To tackle this issue, researchers tested different herbicides on rice plants to see which ones worked best at controlling weeds. They found that using a combination of pendimethalin and bispyribac sodium herbicides followed by fenoxaprop and chlorimuron + metsulfuron herbicides at the right times gave the best weed control and increased rice grain yield by 4.3%. This method was even better than hand weeding. So, using these herbicides in a specific order can help farmers manage weeds and grow more rice in dry-seeded fields.
