By analyzing data on household finances and job security, the researchers found that people tend to save more when they feel uncertain about their income. They also discovered that the main source of uncertainty changes depending on the state of the economy: job insecurity is a significant factor when unemployment is low, but becomes even more important during times of high unemployment.
