Butterfly size determines detection rate in species inventory surveys.
The researchers studied butterfly species in Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala, to see what factors affect how easily they are detected. They found 141 butterfly species, with the biggest ones in the Papilionidae and Nymphalidae families and the smallest in the Hesperidae and Lycanidae families. The number of butterflies seen was related to how many there were, how big they were, and what they were doing. Abundance was the most important factor affecting detection, followed by size and activities. This information could help improve methods for counting butterflies in the future.
