Common language key to boosting cross-border innovation in Europe.
Innovation is important for economic growth, and cross-border collaboration can help with this. A study looked at 45 European regions to see what factors affect the number of patents created together. They found that being close in distance and technology makes it more likely to collaborate. Speaking the same language also helps. Surprisingly, being a member of the EU for a long time can actually decrease collaboration, while being from Central and Eastern European countries increases it.
