Semiarid region soil stores surprising amounts of carbon, impacting global climate.
Soil in the Sardooeyeh region stores both organic and inorganic carbon, which can help offset global carbon dioxide levels. By studying soil profiles, researchers found that organic carbon is highest near the surface due to vegetation, while inorganic carbon is highest deeper down. Altitude affects carbon levels, with higher altitudes having more organic carbon. Overall, the soil in the region stores between 5.52 to 9.48 kg/m2 of organic carbon and between 14.41 to 91.34 kg/m2 of inorganic carbon.
