Deforestation in Kashmir Himalayas Driven by Illicit Felling and Poverty.
The study aimed to understand deforestation and forest degradation in the PirPanjal region of Kashmir Himalayas. Using satellite data and field validation, the researchers found that illicit felling, poverty, and lack of employment were the main drivers of deforestation. However, efforts like plantation and afforestation helped in some areas. The study suggests prioritizing actions for restoration and conservation based on these drivers to reverse deforestation and forest degradation.
