Overfishing crisis: 36% of Indian marine fish stocks in danger.
The researchers studied 223 important fish stocks in India from 1997 to 2016. They used a model to understand how fishing affects these stocks. They found that 34.1% of fish stocks are sustainable, 36.3% are overfished, 26.5% are recovering, and 3.1% are being overfished. The southwest coast has more sustainable stocks, the northwest coast has more overfished stocks, and the northeast coast has more recovering stocks. Overall, the fish stocks are at 86% of their maximum sustainable level, showing the need for better fisheries management. Recommendations were made to reduce fishing in areas with overfished stocks.
