Urban stormwater runoff a major source of microplastics, rain gardens offer hope.
Urban stormwater runoff in the San Francisco Bay area contains high concentrations of microplastics, including fibers and black rubbery fragments. These particles come from sources like tires and roads. A rain garden was found to be effective in capturing and removing 96% of microplastics from stormwater, making it a promising solution to prevent microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems.
