Natural grasslands in China store carbon, impacting global climate change.
The researchers studied the amount of carbon stored in different types of grasslands in Ningxia, China. They found that meadow steppe and warm steppe had the highest carbon storage, mainly in their roots. Steppe desert and desert steppe had lower carbon storage, mostly in aboveground vegetation. Root carbon storage decreased with soil depth. The southern part of meadow steppe and temperate steppe had more carbon than the middle and north part of desert steppe and steppe desert.
