New method identifies pure oil palm plants for improved crop breeding.
Scientists have found a simple way to identify natural haploid oil palm plants by screening abnormal seeds. They selected seeds with unique characteristics, grew them, and then selected seedlings with specific traits. By using flow cytometry and chromosome analysis, they confirmed one plant as a haploid. Further testing showed that the plant was completely homozygous, meaning it had only one set of chromosomes. This study has established a straightforward method to quickly identify haploid oil palm plants.
