Sowing Sorghum Before Rains Boosts Yields, Transforming Food Security in Eritrea
In a study on sorghum growth and yield in Eritrea, researchers tested different sowing dates and methods. Sowing before the first summer rains led to the highest grain yield. Transplanting sorghum plants gave the next best results, but it's harder and more expensive. Sowing methods affected leaf area and leaf index, while sowing dates impacted stand count, height, grain weight, yields, and plant development. However, the interaction between sowing dates and methods didn't have a big effect on these factors. Direct sowing with hydro seed priming also showed good grain yields. Planting sorghum before the rain and using certain methods can help boost yields and growth in these semi-arid areas.
