Organic Farming Boosts Incomes, Offers Path to Sustainable Development in Benin
Organic farming can be just as profitable as conventional farming in North Benin. A study compared the incomes of organic and conventional farmers growing cotton, corn, and soybeans. Despite some challenges, organic cotton farming was found to be more profitable. Factors like agricultural assets, contact with extension agents, and experience in organic farming positively influenced organic farming income. On the other hand, household size and cotton acreage had a negative impact on organic farming income. To improve agricultural incomes and achieve sustainable development goals, it is important to promote the adoption of best organic farming practices and focus on growing corn and soybeans alongside cotton.
