Smallholder farmers in Nigeria may not always make a profit from using fertilizer on their sorghum crops. By studying data from Nigeria, researchers found that increasing the yield response rate of applied nitrogen is more effective in making fertilizer use profitable for these farmers. This means that improving soil and fertilizer quality, using complementary inputs, and better management practices can help smallholders benefit more from using fertilizer on their sorghum crops.
