Agro-ecosystems unlock untapped potential to boost food, fuel, and fiber production sustainably.
This article discusses how important it is to understand all the benefits that farms provide beyond just food and other products. Traditionally, people mainly look at how much food is grown to see how well a farm is doing. The researchers argue that this approach is too simple because it doesn't consider all the other ways that farms help the environment and society. They suggest a new way to measure these benefits by looking at many different aspects, not just one number. They tried this new method in three different areas in Germany and found that just looking at how much food is produced is not enough to understand how well a farm is working. By considering more factors, like how much is put into the farm compared to what comes out, we can get a better idea of how farms help us and the environment. This new approach could help us make farms more sustainable and better for the land they're on.
